What does the Division of Consumer Protection do?
The Mission of the Division of Consumer Protection is:
"To respond to consumer complaints, unfair and deceptive business
practices, and provide consumer education. The Division has a three-pronged
approach to consumer protection: education, registration, and enforcement."
As a regulatory agency, Consumer Protection regulates and enforces a variety
of laws relating
to consumer issues. The Division provides education to consumers through press
releases, news media, presentations to schools, community groups and businesses,
and brochures. The Division also provides registration opportunities for
business opportunities (assisted-marketing plans), charities, credit service
organizations, health spa facilities, professional fundraisers/fundraising counsel/fundraising consultants, and
telemarketers. The Division also enforces violations of the
consumer protection laws through administrative action against businesses. The
Division does NOT have authority to become involved in civil disputes or
in transactions that are related by other government agencies.
Consumer Protection's motto is:
"The consumer has a right to safety, the right to
be informed,
the right to choose, the right to be heard, the right to consumer education."
